By analyzing another student’s work,
it allowed myself to see what was classed for each grade. The next person’s
work that I decided to look at was by Daniel Bowers, who created the opening
sequence for the film ‘Young Killer’.
Looking at this opening sequence, I
can automatically see the difference between what Daniel created, compared to
what Tammy came up with. This made me think that Daniel’s work was at a lower
grade as well. The main reason for thinking this is because the way that Daniel
presented his blog, I could see that there was less blog posts, less images and
not as many different media’s used to present the information. This suggests
the little effort and care that was taken into account when doing the blog.
I started off by looking at Daniel’s
opening sequence ‘Young Killer’ to see what the strengths of the clip were. In
the whole thing it was very difficult to find the strengths over the weaknesses
because this was not the best video clip out of them all.
The first strength that I did find
was that Daniel included a few title credits throughout the beginning part,
however they were all clumped together at one point of the opening and not
throughout. By adding the titles it allows the audience to start off by seeing
the information about who is in the extract and gives credit to the other
people involved. This suggests the importance of the people involved and makes
the clip feel more like an opening, rather than include a trailer feel to it.
Another strength of the opening
sequence was the one camera shot. The camera shot of which worked well was the
shot of the bedroom door, because it was the only shot that was in focus and
was a lot steadier than the other shots.
When watching the opening of ‘Young
Killer’, I can automatically see weaknesses throughout the opening. When the
audience is watching the extract, they do not want to be watching something
dull and boring. The main reason for mentioning this is because the clips that
was created is like the same old stuff because they used the same type of
transitions, which was a black screen that went to the next clip. The way that
Daniel added this was in the most basic way, when he could have at least made
the black out, a fade or a dissolve to black to make it look and fade through a
lot smoother. Adding on to this, the idea of mentioning this allows myself to
know what works well and what should be avoided. The technique used is one that
may need to be avoided as it did not really work, because it was nothing really
special too look at and got boring after the first time.
Another problem with the way the
opening sequence was the camera. The camera work in the opening was at a very
low level compared to what I have seen before, for the reason of which is that
for the majority of the clips the video was in and out of focus, with a very
basic angle used on the camera. At one point the camera was in focus for a
whole shot, but that was the longest time as it was only looking at the door of
the bedroom. By looking at this it is letting me realize that doing more than
one shot of that clip does not mean that I am having a problem, however it
allows myself to get the perfect shot.
Adding on to this another weakness
found was the actor. The idea for mentioning the weakness of this is because there
is a clip used that does not look realistic for a little kid to take on the role
of doing and if it is a kid it could turn more like a horror. The clip was when
a head was found in the bin bag. The reason for mentioning this is because the
characters need to still look real, and a kid would not easily be able to kill
a grown up as they can fight back a lot more. Furthering on the idea, it may
not of worked because the child used did not portray what was happening very
well, and in my opinion he may of felt awkward and out of place due to his body
language and clothes that he was wearing.
A few other weaknesses:
- Camera is out of focus and not steady
- Location has not been thought about
- The shots are lasting to long, and very boring to watch
- Just watching a shower curtain
- Very basic as the cuts between them just fade into black as well as the shots don't look put together properly, just random clips.
- Does not seem realistic because it is a little kid in the video clips --> with the kid he looks very uncomfortable when waking up at the beginning part
- Why is he putting on an apron, as it makes no sense
Overall:
My overall opinions of ‘Young Killer’
is a lot more negative than positive because there is a lot of problems with
the overall way the opening turned out. The positive thing about looking at a
very different type of opening and blog allows myself to know how to avoid the
lower grades.
